Differential and transfer case servicing in Cardiff
Four wheel drive systems have oil in them, and that oil has a service interval. Almost nobody does it, which is why we see so many transfer cases that did not need to fail.
What is included
- Front and rear differential oil change to the manufacturer specification
- Transfer case oil change on four wheel drive models
- BMW xDrive transfer case service, and actuator diagnosis and replacement
- Audi and VW group Haldex oil and filter service
- Mercedes-Benz 4Matic transfer case and differential service
- Differential and transfer case leak diagnosis and seal replacement
- Whine, vibration and drivetrain noise traced to the source
- Propshaft centre bearings and universal joints
What it costs
Priced per vehicle, because a single rear differential oil change and a full four wheel drive driveline service are very different jobs. What we will always tell you is which of these your car actually has, since plenty of owners do not know whether theirs is a Haldex, a transfer case or a permanent system.
How long it takes
A differential or transfer case oil service is usually a couple of hours. Actuator or motor replacement is longer, and internal work is quoted separately once we know what we are dealing with.
Which makes
All four wheel drive makes. We are deepest on BMW xDrive, Audi quattro, VW group Haldex and Mercedes-Benz 4Matic, which is most of the four wheel drive cars in Cardiff.

Differential and transfer case, questions answered
Does a differential really need servicing?
Yes. It is full of oil that shears and degrades like any other. Many manufacturers list an interval and plenty of garages never mention it. A differential oil change is a modest job. A replacement differential is not.
My BMW xDrive judders on full lock or at low speed.
That is the classic transfer case symptom, and it is very often the actuator motor rather than the transfer case itself. Diagnosed early it is a repair. Left alone it can chew the transfer case, which is a far bigger bill.
What is a Haldex service?
Haldex is the four wheel drive coupling on most VW, Audi, SEAT and Skoda models. It has its own oil and, on many generations, its own filter, typically due around every 40,000 miles. Skipping it is one of the most common causes of four wheel drive dropping out.
How do I know if my car is four wheel drive?
Give us the registration and we will tell you exactly what system it has and what is due on it. It is not always obvious from the badge.
Do you do this on non-German cars?
Yes. Any four wheel drive vehicle with a differential and a transfer case, which includes most of the pickups and the older Land Rovers we see.
