What a general garage cannot do

The difference between a garage that will take your BMW and a garage that knows it is mostly software, schedules and having seen the same fault a hundred times.

  • Five years as a technician at BMW Sytner Cardiff
  • Condition Based Servicing read and reset through the car's own system
  • Marque-level diagnostics across every module, including coding
  • Timing chain and VANOS work, common on several BMW engines
  • Electronic parking brake retraction and calibration
  • Genuine and OEM parts so a BMW warranty is unaffected
  • Adaptive and air suspension diagnosis and repair
  • Battery registration after replacement, which most garages skip
  • xDrive transfer case servicing and actuator repair
  • Gearbox oil and filter services on ZF automatics and DCT boxes
  • MOT testing on site, so a service and a test are one visit

What we actually see go wrong on BMW

Written from what comes through the door, not copied off a forum. If yours is doing one of these, you are not imagining it.

N47 diesel

Timing chain rattle from the back of the engine

The best known BMW fault there is. The chain sits at the gearbox end, so the engine has to come out. Catching the rattle early is the difference between a big job and a new engine.

N20 and N26 petrol

Rattle on cold start

Timing chain and guides again, on the four cylinder turbo petrols. Same principle: the noise is the warning, and it is worth acting on.

N54 and N55

Loss of power and a boost fault

Usually the charge pipe or the wastegate rattle on the N54, and the high pressure fuel pump on earlier cars. Well documented and well understood.

E90 and F30 3 Series

Water in the boot or the spare wheel well

Usually perished tail light seals. Cheap to fix, expensive to ignore, because the boot floor is where several modules live.

xDrive models

Judder or shunt on full lock and at low speed

The transfer case actuator, almost every time. Caught early it is an actuator and a transfer case oil service. Ignored, it takes the transfer case with it, and that is a different order of bill entirely.

Most models from 2010 on

New battery, and the car still misbehaves

A replacement battery has to be registered to the car so the charging system knows it is new. Skip that and the alternator overcharges it and you are buying another one within a year.

Service schedules

BMW uses Condition Based Servicing, so the car itself works out when each item is due from how it is driven and reports it as separate counters: oil service, brake fluid, spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter, brakes and the MOT date. We read those counters from the car, tell you which are actually due, and reset the ones we do. That is why two identical cars can need completely different work on the same day.

The dealer question

Sytner do a proper job. So does a workshop where somebody spent five years learning it in their building, at a price that reflects the overheads of a unit at Marine Village rather than a showroom.

Servicing at a qualified independent does not void a manufacturer warranty, provided the manufacturer schedule is followed and the parts used match the required quality. We do both, and we record it. How we handle parts.

BMW, questions answered

What is Condition Based Servicing?

BMW's system for working out what your car needs from how it has actually been driven, rather than on a fixed annual schedule. Each item counts down separately, which is why an oil service and a brake fluid change rarely land together.

Do you register a new battery to the car?

Yes, always. It is a five minute job with the right software and it is the difference between a battery lasting five years and lasting one.

My N47 is rattling. Is it worth repairing?

That depends on the car's value and its overall condition, and we will give you a straight answer rather than an optimistic one. What we will not do is tell you it is nothing.

Will independent servicing affect my BMW warranty?

No, as long as the manufacturer schedule is followed and the parts match the required quality. We do both and we record it.
